The song was considered a bit of a protest song for Vietnam, but Webb said that was not the war he had in mind when he penned the words.The song portrays Galveston as a woman and the singer as a soldier who misses her. The song made it to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit #1 on the Easy Listening Charts.
