Boxcar Song History

The Winds Of Yesterday
This song was written by Boxcar and he performed it on a regular basis at his threatre in Branson.

Boxcar Facts

Boxcar Willie's real name was Lecil Travis Martin and he was born near Ovilla, Texas.

Boxcar was a pilot and flight engineer during the Korean War (early 50's), flying the B-29 aircraft. Who would have thought he'd become a hobo singer after the war? He actually did both until leaving the Air Force in 1976.

He never worked on the railroad, but did run away alot using the rails.

Story goes that he was sitting at a railroad crossing in Lincoln Nebraska and saw a boxcar pass by with a guy in it that looked alot like a work mate of his named Willie Wilson. He adopted that famous BW name and won first place in a talent show in San Jose, Ca.

He performed under the name Marty Martin however when he first began singing in clubs.

By taking a chance, he went to Nashville to get his big break. It happened in 1976 when he replaced a sick George Jones at a nightclub. Due to that show, he started his career in England and Scotland.

He was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry as its 60th member in 1981 and passed away in Branson MO on 12th Apr 99 at age 67 from leukemia.
