Before Kenny left for Nashville in 1991, he and some fellow musicians recorded several songs he'd written at a recording studio in Bristol VA. He sold all 1000 copies at some of his bar gigs and purchased a new Martin guitar with the profits.
Although progress always moves slow when you're looking for that big break, Kenny did manage to secure some gigs at a real honky-tonk called the Turf, which no longer exists. In 1992 Kenny won a songwriters contract from the Opryland Music Group which opened the door a bit wider.
While appearing at a songwriters showcase in 1993, Capricorn Records gave Kenny his first recording contract. The company eventually folded, but not before "The Tin Man" made it to #70 on Billboard's country singles chart.
Then the called that changed everything occurred when Joe Galante from RCA offered Kenny a recording contract. He signed Kenny to their afiliate, BNA where Kenny has remained until this day.
